Subject: #01-003 Heidi, sad news
Carrie Buechler, adoptive mom of #01-003 Heidi
phoned this morning from their home in Minnesota. She had the sad news that
they put Heidi to sleep yesterday afternoon. The vet suspects that she had a
cancerous heart tumor.
Heidi & her pal Ben were surrendered in January
2001, when she was age 5 or perhaps a bit older. Their owner's job required
that he travel frequently, and he was unable to give them enough
attention. The dogs were always well treated, and the original owner loved
them very much.
At the time of Heidi's adoption, a suspicious lump
on her thyroid gland was discovered. Tests were inconclusive, and we were
unsure whether the tumor was cancerous or benign...but Mark & Carrie remained
firm in their committment to keep her.
Carrie Buechler talked about how much Heidi
enjoyed children, and about what a sweet, even tempered girl she was. Carrie
& Marks' 3 daughters are having a hard time with Heidi's death. She related
the story of Heidi picking up a beanie baby & placing it alongside Carrie's
youngest daughter who was then age 3, sound asleep. One of Heidi's favorite
activities in her latter years, was walking Carrie & the girls to & from
school...preschool neighbor children tagged along, just to be with Heidi. The
family moved to Wisconsin one year ago, and Heidi really enjoyed playing in
the snow.
