Remembered
Higgins
When
“Professor” Higgins came into foster care as a stray from the shelter, he was
malnourished, battling kennel cough and heartworms. In spite of his bony frame,
dull and raggedy fur, and telltale odor, his innate charm was shining through.
Higgins
was a big guy – tall and long, with a big head and feet. His finest features
were his big soft brown eyes, which he fixed on anyone and everyone, seeking
attention. After leading a life of luxury for a couple of months, Higgins’ deep
red fur became shiny and soft and while out walking drew many “What a beautiful
dog!” comments.
While Higgins had obviously been toughing it out “on the streets” for some time,
he tapped into his inner housedog immediately. He looooved being cozy and comfy,
well-fed, brushed, and fussed over. He was given the “run of the house” in short
order and never blew it.
Although (approximately) 8-9 years old, Higgins had bursts of energy that were
quite surprising. He had two gears: full speed and flat out. He was an
experienced “panhandler” with a refined begging technique: he would hang his
head and place a big paw in your lap. His signature trick was to “high-five.”
Having come through his heartworm treatment with flying colors, we had just
begun treating Higgins like a “normal” dog again when one morning he just
couldn’t/wouldn’t get up. Diagnosed with a tumor in his abdomen and internal
bleeding, we said a peaceful goodbye to Higgins “the love sponge.” We only had
him four months but loved him dearly and know he loved us and the life he lived
in the final chapter of his too-short life.
